‘Go topless’: As Household Waste Soars, Here’s What You Can Do

Whether it’s the coffee you’re now drinking from a disposable takeaway cup or your pile of parcel packaging from moving your shopping online, a lot of us have seen a rise in our household waste.

The Australian Council of Recycling says households are throwing out about 20 per cent more rubbish and recyclables in their kerbside bins than they were pre-coronavirus. That’s a climb from 10 per cent in April.

While global pollution levels are down and waste from businesses has fallen, ACOR chief executive Pete Schmigel says the sheer amount of household waste is at levels normally seen around Christmas time.

Kate Nelson has spent 10 years avoiding plastic, but even she has found her fiercely sustainable lifestyle confronted by the pandemic.
